History
Kozani Sheep does not belong to a specific breed. Rather it constitutes a composite population with influence from extinct or rare mountain breeds such as Sarakatsaniko, Arvanitovlachiko, Gramoustiano, etc and also from lowland sheep such as Karagouniko, Chios etc. In 1990 a breeding group from the above population was stationed at the ‘Vlasti Training Center for Livestock Farming’. In 1968 a herd of 50-100 animals originally from Kozani with characteristics of Sarakatsaniko and Vlachiko sheep was formed and maintained for over 30 years at the ‘Giannitsa Livestock Institute’.
Population
